Welcome to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) at
South Ocala International Academy IB Candidate School!
What is the PYP?
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is part of the globally recognized International Baccalaureate (IB) framework. It is designed to nurture a lifelong love of learning and help young learners grow into globally-minded, curious, and caring individuals. Through the PYP, we encourage students to take ownership of their education, explore big ideas, and connect their learning to real-world issues and personal experiences.
What Does Learning Look Like in the PYP?
At South Ocala International Academy, we focus on developing each child as an inquirer, thinker, communicator, and risk-taker. The PYP emphasizes inquiry-based learning, where students actively ask questions, explore new ideas, and engage in hands-on activities to build a deeper understanding of concepts. Learning in the PYP is organized around “transdisciplinary themes” that allow children to make connections across traditional subject areas, including language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
IB Learner Profile
Our students strive to embody the traits of the IB Learner Profile, which are key characteristics we believe all learners should develop. These traits include being caring, knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, balanced, reflective, and more. Each month, we spotlight one of these traits school-wide to help students practice and grow as balanced and responsible global citizens.
Why Choose the PYP?
The PYP fosters not just academic excellence, but also social and emotional growth. In our program, students learn skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. They also develop empathy, respect, and a sense of responsibility to the world around them. This holistic approach prepares students not only for academic success but also for the challenges of the 21st century.
How Do We Assess Learning in the PYP?
Assessment in the PYP is continuous, varied, and designed to support each student’s unique learning journey. Instead of relying solely on tests, we use a range of assessment methods, such as projects, presentations, and portfolios. This approach allows students to demonstrate their learning in ways that highlight their strengths and areas for growth, while fostering self-reflection and goal-setting.
Partnership with Parents
Parents are a vital part of the PYP journey! We encourage open communication, and we welcome your involvement. Throughout the year, we offer information sessions, PYP newsletters, and updates so that you can stay engaged with your child’s learning. Together, we can create a supportive and inspiring environment that empowers every student to reach their full potential.
